history
In the Orrington area, a first settlement was established in June 1770 by Captain John Brewer of Worcester, Massachusetts, at the mouth of the Segeunkedunk River. There he also built a mill. A grand had been promised to him, but after the skirmishes in Lexington and Concord there was no further grant. Brewer and the other settlers left the area during the war and did not return until after the war ended. The area was surveyed in 1784, and on March 25, 1786, Brewer and another settler named Simeon Fowler bought part of the area. Moses Knapp and his group bought the rest. Many of the first settlers were seafarers who were forced to stay on land due to the war and they returned to their old occupation after the war. Before the town was founded on March 21, 1788, the area was known as New Worcester or Township No. 9, East Side of the Penobscot River (T9 EPR) .
