The area was first settled in 1830 by John Clifford. On February 21, 1878 the Reed Plantation was founded. The original name for this area was Township No. 1, Third Range West of the Easterly Line of the State (T1 R3 WELS). In 1886 the European and North American Railway ran through the Plantation area. At that time there were two schools in Reed. In 1880 109 people lived there.
