According to the United States Census Bureau , Reed Plantation has a total area of 153.3 km², of which 152.7 km² is land and 0.6 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Reed is in the very south of Aroostook County . It is bordered by Penobscot County to the south . The Mattawamkeag River , a tributary of the Penobscot River , flows south through the southeast corner of the plantation. Several tributaries flow south into the Mattawamkeag River. In the northwest is the 185 m high Beech Hill.

City structure
There are several settlement areas in Reed: Maloy (former post office), Reed and Wytopitlock .
The settlement of Wytopitlock is better known than Reed itself because of its interesting name. There are 28 different spellings for this place name, it is said to come from the Abenaki language and is called place where there are alders .

history
The area was first settled in 1830 by John Clifford. On February 21, 1878 the Reed Plantation was founded. The original name for this area was Township No. 1, Third Range West of the Easterly Line of the State (T1 R3 WELS). In 1886 the European and North American Railway ran through the Plantation area. At that time there were two schools in Reed. In 1880 109 people lived there.

The US Highway 2A runs through the northwest corner of Reed. In the area of the settlement of Reed, the Maine State Route 171 branches off in the southeast and connects the settlement of Reed with the settlement of Wytopitlock.
