Wade was settled in 1846 and the area was initially referred to as the Township T13 R4 WELS. In 1861 Wade was organized as a plantation so that the residents of Wade could vote. In 1874 the place was permanently recognized as a plantation, on March 4, 1913 it was given town status. The place was at times known as Garden Creek Plantation and Dunntown, Wade .
