Geographical location

Linneus is located in the southeast of Aroostook County, near the border with Canada . In the northwest of the Meduxnekeag Lake and in the northeast of Nickerson Lake borders on the area of ​​the town. The town of Linneus was founded on March 19, 1836. Linneus was a Massachusetts Grant to fill a professorship in botany. Hence Linneus was named after the renowned botanist Carl von Linné . The first settler in Linneus was Daniel Neal from New Brunswick. He settled here in 1826. A year later, the settlement area was divided into individual plots. Another settler was Colonel Moses Burleigh, captain of the Maine Militia in the War of 1812. He represented the district in the Massachusetts Legislature for several years and served in the Mains Legislature for several years after it separated from Massachusetts.

There were two sawmills and one gristmill in Linneus, near Meduxnekeag Lake. The soil is very good arable land and mainly potatoes, hay and wheat are grown, as well as maize.
