Previously this area was named Township No. 11, Sixth Range West of the Easterly Line of the State (T11 R6 WELS). The Garfield Plantation was named after the 20th  President of the United States, James A. Garfield .

There are few paved roads in the Garfield Plantation area. These are to the east bordering the Town Ashland, through which Maine State Route 11 also runs. Most of the routes through Garfield are unpaved. To the northeast is the Six Mile Checkpoint to the North Woods of the Unorganized Territory of Northwest Aroostook.
