history

The northern part of Bridgewater was given by the Massachusetts General Court as a grant to the Bridgewater Academy and the southern part to the Portland Academy. Bridgewater was named after the city of the same name in Massachusetts . On March 2, 1858, Bridgewater was declared a town .

The Presque Isle River flows through the northern part of the town, into which the westward flowing Whitney Brook flows. There is a small settlement at the mouth, where there was also a sawmill and a grist mill. A bridge at this point was about 500 m long and made entirely of cedar wood.

In the town there were other sawmills, a post office, a tannery, a starch factory, a steam mill and a buckwheat mill. The soil is only slightly loamy where it is not rocky or gravelly, so that a large variety of fruits and grains can be grown. Wheat, oats, barley, buckwheat and potatoes were grown. There were also fruit trees and berry bushes, the fruits of which were processed in a nearby distillery until Prohibition. The income from rent was split proportionally between Bridgewater and Portland Academy, while the General Court alone, later the Town Council, could decide on any land sales.

In the center of Bridgewater is the Bridgewater Town Hall and Jail, a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places under number 89002339. This building, built in the Victorian style, was used as a town hall with government functions, as a seat of social organizations and for public events. Today it's a museum.
