Merrill is a town in Aroostook County in the state of Maine in the United States and is located directly on the border with Canada . In 2010, 273 people lived there in 149 households on an area of 96.8 km². Merrill does not have its own local government, but does so from nearby Smyrna .

Geographical location
Merrill is in southwest Aroostook County. There are few very small lakes in Merrill. Centrally located is Read Lake, the largest. Some smaller streams drain the area to the southeast. The surface of the town is rather flat. In the northwest is the 403 m high Sholler Mountain and in the northeast the 301 m high Little Brawn.

history
Merrill was raised to plantation on September 6, 1858 to give residents the right to vote. The area was reorganized in 1876, 1880 and 1895. Until 1855, the north-west belonged to the much larger Rockabema Plantation. The Merrill Plantation area was previously known as Township No. 6, Fourth Range West of the Easterly Line of the State (T6 R4 WELS). Merrill became a town on March 4, 1911 and named after Captain William Merrill, who bought the area in 1840 and whose son Edward moved there as a settler in 1844.

traffic
The US Highway 2 runs through the southeast corner of the Town and combines Merrill with Iceland Falls and Houlton. Maine State Route 212 runs from the southeast diagonally to the northwest .
