Around 1834, more people settled in the area as loggers . After the Aroostook War, the town's residents cleared the border line with Canada in 1842 and erected iron stakes as border marks. However, many families from Canada continued to settle at the foot of Mars Hill. The town's first school was opened in 1860. With increasing demand for wood after the end of the American Civil War , the town grew, roads were built and more and more land was cleared for agriculture .

In 1892 the place was connected to the railway network. As a result, more businesses were set up, and a bank and a cinema were opened. In 1912 a small community hospital was built that could accommodate five to six patients. In 1922 a fire destroyed many houses, including a new school. The town's first library was opened in 1937.
