Oxbow is a plantation in Aroostook County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there lived 66 people in 74 households on an area of 99.2 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Oxbow has a total area of 99.1 km², of which 97.9 km² is land and 1.2 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Penobscot County borders in the south of Oxbow . The Aroostook River flows northeast, through Oxbow. Another arm of the Aroostook River flows from the south in a northerly direction and north of the settlement of Oxbow it flows into the Aroostook River. To the southeast of Oxbow is the 320 m high Oak Hill.

history
The area was settled around 1839 and in 1848 as Township No. 9, Sixth Range West of the Easterly Line of the State (T9 R6 WELS) and called Umcolcus Plantation . The post office was also located in Umcolcus. On August 8, 1870, it was renamed Oxbow Plantation. This was legalized in 1873 and confirmed in 1895. In 1880, Oxbow Plantation was home to 147 people. There is only one settlement in Oxbow around the post office.
In 2015, the residents of the plantation voted in favor of the plantation being disorganized. Residents want to be among the Unorganized Lords in Aroostoock County because the cost of residents is becoming too high for this small community. Oxbow's stake in the joint Ashland District School is approximately $ 57,000. Which is an enormous burden for the almost 60 residents.

Economy and Infrastructure
The main source of income for the place is hunting . Oxbow offers a variety of hunter accommodations whose main attraction is guided bear hunts. Fishing and canoeing are also available to tourists. There are also shops selling Maine handicrafts.

East of Oxbow, Maine State Route 11 , the Aroostoock Sceenic Highway, one of the oldest roads in northern Maine, runs in a north-south direction past Oxbow. The Oxbow Road branches off to the west and runs centrally through Oxbow. Oxbow does not have its own library. The closest are available to residents of Oxbow in Ashland, Presque Isle or Caribou.
The Katahdin Valley Health Center has a facility in Ashland that can also be used by Oxbow residents.
education
The Ashland School District is located in Ashland and is part of Maine School Administrative District # 32 . In addition to Ashland, the district also includes Garfield Plantation, Masardis, Oxbow, Portage Lake and Sheridan. The Ashland District School offers classes from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade for approximately 320 school children. The school is accredited with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
