New Sweden is a town in Aroostook County in the state of Maine in the United States . It is part of what is known as the Swedish Colony in Maine. In 2010 there lived 602 inhabitants in 323 households on an area of ​​89.6 km².

New Sweden is considered to be the starting point of the Swedish colony in Maine in Aroostook County. William Widgery Thomas, Jr. had been hired by the state immigration service to recruit immigrants from Sweden. He was returning from a trip to Sweden with 51 immigrants who founded New Sweden on July 23, 1870. The colony flourished and Stockholm (1881) and Westmanland (1879) were founded in the area.

The residents of New Sweden have preserved some Swedish traditions, including celebrations such as " St. Lucia Day " and " Midsommar ." The founding day (July 23) is celebrated every year. The Swedish language can sometimes be heard from older residents.

In 2003 there were several serious poisonings when the coffee that was drunk together in the Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church after mass was mixed with arsenic . One parishioner died and 15 others suffered severe poisoning. A man was suspected of having been found shot five days later.

The New Sweden Historical Society Museum in the house called Capitolium shows exhibits on the history of the place and the colony and the Lindsten Stuga House itself can be visited publicly as an example of a typical log cabin of the immigrants.
