Fort Fairfield is a town in Aroostook County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 3496 inhabitants in 1674 households on an area of 202.9 km². Fort Fairfield is right on the border with Canada .

According to the United States Census Bureau , Fort Fairfield has a total area of 202.95 km², of which 198.57 km² is land and 4.37 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Fort Fairfield is located in the northeastern part of Aroostook County on the border with Canada. The town is located on the Aroostook River near the confluence with the Saint John River . In the area of the town there are other rivers and streams, such as the Fitzherberts Stream and the Johnston Brook, the Gray Brook and the Hurd Brook. The Livingston River flows through the northeast corner of the Town and the DeChute the southwest corner. To the south are Monson Pond and Christina Reservoir . The surface of the town is hilly, the highest point is the 258 m high Melville Hill in the southwest of Fort Fairfield.

City structure
There are several settlement areas in the town of Fort Fairfield. To the north are Goodrich and Houghtonville (former railway station). To the northwest, on the Aroostook River, is Goodwin . Centrally located on a loop of the Aroostook River is the McShea settlement and to the south of it Maple Grove and Fairmont . Other settlements include: East Road (East Road Siding), Fort Fairfield , Monson Mill , Morrow Road , Murphy Road (former railway station), Robie (formerly a post office), and Stevensville .

history
The town was founded on March 11, 1858 and was given the letter D. In 1867 the Plymouth Grant, the Sarsfield Plantation was added to the area of the town. The town was named after the nearby fort and John Fairfield, the then governor of Maine. The first settlers arrived in this area from New Brunswick around 1816. The large number of rivers already favored the construction of various mills at that time. There were five sawmills for sawn timber and roof shingles, a planing and cleaning mill, two grist mills, two starch factories, a barrel factory, a furniture factory and other companies. A stretch of the New Brunswick Railway runs through Fort Fairfield.
There is an Amish community in Fort Fairfield. This is located in the south of the town, partly in the area of the neighboring town of Easton.
The town operates a wind farm.

US Highway 1 runs through Easton in a north-south direction , this is crossed by Maine State Route 161 , which runs parallel to the Aroostook River in a west-east direction. From the southwest, Maine State Route 167 joins Highway 1. Fort Fairfield Airport (ME00) has a runway.

Fort Fairfield has its own library, the Fort Fairfield Public Library Central Library .
There is no hospital or infirmary at Fort Fairfield. Closest facilities are in Carubou and Presque Isle.
