Allagash is a town in Aroostook County in the state of Maine in the United States . It is the largest town in Maine in terms of land area, but one of the poorest in population with only 239 inhabitants. Allagash is located in the North Maine Woods region.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has an area of 340.1 km²; 332.8 km² of this is land and 7.3 km² is water .
Geographical location
Allagash is located in northern Aroostook County at the confluence of the Allagash River with the Saint John River . The Saint John River flows through the town in an easterly direction, the Allagash River flows into the Saint John River from the south. To the north of Allagash is Little Falls Pond . The surface of the town is hilly, the highest point is the 455 m high Kelly Brook Mountain .

Compared to the long-term mean, the place is around 7 degrees cooler in winter and around 1.5 degrees in summer than the mean for the state of Maine. The daily sunshine duration is at the lower end of the range in the USA. In the winter season between October and April, an average of 243.8 cm of snow falls, with the peak values being 57.4 cm in December and 51.8 cm in January.
history
In 1838 the first settlers settled at the estuary. These were Sara Ann, Anna and John Gardner and William Mullins along with their brothers John Webster and Joseph Bradford. The families reached Allagash by canoe, up the Restigouche River, then down the Wagan River. The first child born here was Isaac Gardner, son of Anna and John Gardner.
On September 28, 1885, the area, which had previously been divided into several townships, was organized as a plantation. The former townships were named T16 R10, T16 R11, T17 R10 and T17 R11, all WELS. Town Allagash organized on January 31, 1966.
The main industry in Allagash is the timber industry. The first settlers came to this area to cut pine trees and to raft this wood over the rivers to Fredericton. After the trees were felled, farmers settled in some areas. They grew hay and grain. The lumberjacks were often the buyers.

Allagash is the end point of Maine State Route 161 , which leads from here to Saint Francis , Fort Kent , Caribou and Fort Fairfield . In the 1910s, an extension of the Van Buren – Saint Francis line was planned, but it was never built, leaving the city without a railway connection. The nearest airport with scheduled flights is in Presque Isle .

Allagash does not have its own hospital. The closest is Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent.
education
Allagash belongs to the Maine School Administrative District # 27 with Eagle Lake, Fort Kent, New Canada, Saint Francis, Saint John Plantation, Wallagrass and the Winterville Plantation .
