Caswell is a town in Aroostook County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 306 inhabitants in 176 households on an area of ​​108.0 km².

Geographical location

Caswell is located in northeast Aroostook County on the Canadian border. In the south of the town is the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge with the centrally located Butterfield Brook Pond . The Saint John River runs near the northeastern tip of the town.

The settlement was founded in 1878 as Pleasant Ridge Plantation . On April 14, 1879, the town of Caswell was founded and at the same time named after RS ​​Caswell, the first settler in the area. Caswell was and is rich in wood, which is well suited as construction timber. Agriculture is also practiced. In 1890 hops were grown for beer production. Mainly however potatoes, oats, buckwheat and hay. In addition, extensive livestock farming on the farms. Sheep, cattle, pigs and poultry were kept. Today a large part of the cultivation area is used for potatoes and peas. Oats are also sometimes grown.

Next to the Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, there is a land radar station in Caswell, which the government acquired in 1951. Up to 150 people worked in this station.

US Highway 1 runs through the city and continues north towards Van Buren and south towards Limestone . Caswell never had a rail connection. The nearest airport with scheduled flights is in Presque Isle .

education

From 1899 to 1926 there were five small schools in Caswell. Pleasant Ridge School was founded in 1927 for grades 1 through 8, and St Mary's School in 1928. After a new school was built in 1974, St Mary's School closed. The Caswell Elementary School is attended by students from grades 1 to 7, from grade 8 they switch to Limestone High School.
