Caribou is a city in the US state of Maine in Aroostook County . In 2010 there were 8189 inhabitants in 3914 households on an area of 207.7 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Caribou has a total area of 207.5 km², of which 205.3 km² are land and 2.2 km² are water .
Geographical location
Caribou is located in the northeastern part of Aroostook County in northern Maine, near the border with Canada . The surface is level and the ground is made of dark clay, which is well suited for growing wheat, oats and potatoes. Maple, birch, spruce and cedar make up the majority of forest trees. There are no significant elevations in Caribou. The Caribou River flows through the city in the west, in the Caribou Village, near the center, it flows into the Aroostook River . From the north, the Little Madawaska River flows through Caribou and flows into the Aroostook River in the eastern part of the city. There are also other smaller rivers and streams.

history
Around 1824 , New Brunswick settlers settled on the north side of the River Aroostook . Caribou consists of two former townships, the Forstville Plantation to the north and Lyndon and Eaton Grant to the south . Caribou was founded in 1842 under the name Lyndon , town status was granted on April 5, 1859. The first school was built in 1852, and it was renamed to its current name in 1877.
There were several mills on the Little Madawaska River and the Caribou River. There were also carpenters, a gravel plant and a starch factory, and boots and shoes were also produced in the early years. Caribou was the terminus of the New Brunswick Railway , which connected Fredericton with Woodstock.
Caribou became a city on February 23, 1967.
The Gray Memorial United Methodist Church and Parsonage is a listed building in Caribou. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 under number 95000725.

The area is mainly accessed by two roads: US Interstate 95 from the south and the Trans-Canada Highway from the north. The nearest airport is in Presque Isle .

Agriculture is the main industry in Caribou and throughout Aroostook County. Potatoes and broccoli in particular are grown (the largest growing area on the east coast). Other important agricultural products are peas , oats and hay .
Public facilities
The Caribou Public Library has its origins in 1887 when a group of women came together to create a public reading room for the community.
In addition to the Cary Medical Center, Caribou has other medical wards, not only for the residents of the city, but also for those of the neighboring towns.
