They actively sought after the soon-growing community. In 1859 the first schoolhouse was built, which was also used as a church and meeting place for the community. In 1875 a new, larger school building was built and in 1897 the first high school followed , which had to be rebuilt after a fire in 1902. This building was used until 1973. Today Island Falls is part of Regional School Unit 50 and the children from Island Falls attend high school in nearby Dyer Brook . Island Falls has had a library since 1860 and a post office was established in Mr. Sewall's house in 1863. The first church to be built was a Congregational Church in 1894 . Before that, services were held in private rooms. From 1910 to 1965 there was a cinema in Pettengill's Hall, a building that was the cultural center of the town for many years.
