Crystal is a town in Aroostook County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 269 inhabitants in 147 households on an area of 104.7 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Crystal has a total area of 104.71 km², of which 104.74 km² is land and 0.08 km² is water .
Geographical location
Crystal is located on the Crystal Stream, a drain of Crystal Lake, in the southwestern part of Aroostook County and borders on Penobscot County . The Crystal Stream is drained by other smaller rivers that cross the area. The surface of the town is very flat, there are no significant elevations. The southwest is dominated by the Thousand Acre Bog, also known as the Caribou Bog. This wetland is considered of particular ecological importance in the Maine Natural Areas Program .

history
The first settler was William Young in 1839, at the time the area was known as Township No. 4 Range 4 . Crystal was officially established as a Plantation on February 21, 1878. It was recognized as a town on March 21, 1901. The population was 275 people in 1880, and there were no major changes in the further course. The average population between 1970 and 2010 was 297 people.

Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
Interstate 95 and US Highway 22 run through the southeast corner of town . These highways give Crystal good transport links to Canada in the north and Bangor and Portland in the south. The Brownville – Saint-Leonard railway runs through Crystal with one stop.
Public facilities
Crystal does not have its own library. The closest is the Sherman Public Library in Sherman.
There is no hospital or medical facility in Crystal. The closest hospital to Crystal and the region is in Patten.
education
Crystal is part of Regional School Unit 50 with Dyer Brook, Hersey, Island Falls, Merrill, Moro Plantation, Mt. Chase, Oakfield, Patten, Sherman, Smyrna, and Stacyville .
