history
Founded as Plantation No. 11 R1 became the Cary Plantation on June 30, 1859. In 1883 the name was changed to Cary Plantation. The status of the plantation was then confirmed in March 1895. Cary Plantation is named after Shepard Cary, a well-known woodcutter and member of Congress at the time.
Since 2015, Cary has been striving to end independence. The plantation wants to be part of South Aroostook's Unorganized Territory. The background to this is the high taxes and fees for this small town, which would then no longer apply. In 2016, the motion was denied, and a new vote took place in October 2017 on the question of whether another motion should be submitted to the Maine legislature in 2018. The vote went in favor of a new application.
