history

The first settler in this area was William Dalton. He settled at the confluence of the Aroostook River with the Great Machias around 1835. Dalton followed Benjamin Howe a year or two later, who settled on the Aroostook River, not far above him. In 1840 five families lived here. Noah Barker organized the settlement as a plantation at that time . Fairbanks Road to Presque Isle was completed that year. Aroostook Road extends 7 miles off the military road from Mattawamkeag Point to the north of the township. It was laid out a year earlier and was usable from 1843. Previously, the Fish River Road was measured and opened in 1839. It runs north to the mouth of the Fish River.

The surface is flat and the settlers used roughly equal parts for agriculture and the timber industry. There is a village on the east side of the river, near the mouth of the Great Machias.

In 1862 the town was founded with the name Ashland. The name was given in honor of the politician Henry Clay , whose hometown Ashland (Kentucky) was. On February 18, 1862, the settlement was declared a city. A renaming to the name Dalton took place in 1869, but in 1876 the town was renamed back to Ashland. The timber industry peaked in 1915. In memory, the Ashland Logging Museum was opened in 1964 . On September 12, 2002, Maine's worst car accident to date occurred in Ashland. A van manned by 15 Hispanic workers fell off a bridge over the Allagash River. 14 people died in this accident.
