Monticello is a town in Aroostook County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 790 inhabitants in 422 households on an area of ​​99.5 km².

Geographical location

Monticello is centrally located in the east of Aroostook County on the border with Canada . The Northern branch of the Meduxnekeag River flows centrally in an easterly direction through the town's area. There are several smaller lakes in the Monticello area. The larger of these lakes are Jewell Lake to the north, Alerton Lake to the west , Culling Pond and Rideout Lake , and Conroy Lake and Gentle Lake to the south . Smaller rivers run through the town they flow south or north in the Northern branch of the Meduxnekeag River . In the northwest is the 241 m high Sugar Loaf. the Meduxnekeag River flows through the town.

The town was founded on July 29, 1846 from the Monticello Plantation. The original name was Township Letter A, First Range West of the Easterly Line of the State (TA R1 WELS) or Wellington Township .

Early settlers included General Wellington, John Pond, Samuel Stackpole, and Peter Lowell. There was a Methodist church and seven schools in Monticello. In 1870 760 people lived in Monticello, in 1880 there were 965. The soil is good arable land, mainly hay, oats and potatoes were grown. In Monticello Village, on Meduxnekeag North Branch, there was a sawmill and a starch factory.

The Monticello Grange No. 338 is a historic town house. It was built in 1922 and served for many years as a festival building for social events, meetings of the town administration and the school board. It is still used for this purpose today. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 under number 00000760.

US Highway 1 runs through Monticello in a north-south direction and connects Monticello in the north with Caribou and in the south with Houlton. The Brownville – Saint-Leonard line has a stop in Monticello.

In Houlton is the Cary Library , which is also available to the residents of Monticello.
