Portage Lake is a town in Aroostook County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 391 inhabitants in 188 households with a total of 511 "housing units" on an area of 94.9 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Portage Lake has an area of 89.5 km² , of which 79.7 km² are land and 9.8 km² are water .
Geographical location
Portage Lake is centrally located in the northern part of Aroostook County. The lake Portage Lake is centrally located in the area of Town Portage Lake. It is traversed by the Fish River , a tributary of the Saint John River . The Fish River reaches the area in the west of the town and leaves it in a northerly direction. The 301 m high West Mountain is on the southeastern shore of the lake.

history
The first settler of the place is in 1844 Matthew Stevens. In 1850 the place was large enough to be temporarily considered a plantation in the context of elections . It was previously named Township No. 13, Sixth Range West of the Easterly Line of the State (T13 R6 WELS). In 1895 it was finally recognized as a plantation . In 1903 the place received a railway connection. The first general store opened around this time . On March 24, 1909, the place was given the status of a town . Portage Lake was a center of logging in the early twentieth century . The town has had an employed city administrator since 1942. Rescue dogs were trained at Portage Lake during World War II . The film The Last Signal is based on a true story about a dog squad that was trained in Portage Lake and Presque Isle .

traffic
The Maine State Route 11 , the Aroostook Road , one of the oldest roads in northern Maine, crosses the town in north-south direction. It connects Portage Lake with Fort Kent and the Canadian border in the north and Sherman in the south.
The Oakfield – Fort Kent railway runs through Portage Lake .
Public facilities
Portage Lake does not have its own library, the closest being the Ashland Community Library in Ashland.
The Katahdin Valley Health Center operates a facility in Ashland that can also be used by the residents of Portage Lake.
education
The Ashland School District is located in Ashland and is part of Maine School Administrative District # 32 . The district includes Ashland Garfield Plantation, Masardis, Oxbow, Portage Lake and Sheridan.
The Ashland District School offers classes from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade for approximately 320 school children . The school is accredited with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges .
