history
Saint Agatha was initially a Catholic parish that was recognized as the 466th town of Maine in March 1899. The first settler is Menon Ouellette, who set up a logging camp on Long Lake in 1847 and, after the deforestation, decided to use the area for agriculture and to remain. Good harvest yields due to the high quality of the soil attracted further settlers, so that by 1865 30 families had already settled nearby. This settlement, which was officially not yet a town, was called Lac A Menon . The residents were called Du Lac . A first road led to Dickeyville , which is now called Frenchville. Lac A Menon was itself part of the town of Frenchville at times. In 1889 the parish of Saint Agatha was founded, which then became the name of the new town in 1899. The parish, in turn, had Agatha of Catania as its namesake. In 1927, St. Agatha took over land from Frenchville. Even today, 79.7% of the population are French-speaking.
