Eagle Lake is a town in Aroostook County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010, 864 people lived there in 667 households on an area of 102.3 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Eagle Lake has a total area of 102.25 km², of which 96.76 km² are land and 5.49 km² are water .
Geographical location
Eagle Lake is located in the north of Aroostook County at 47 ° 2'24 "north latitude and 68 ° 35'22" directly on the lake of the same name. The border with the Canadian province of New Brunswick is at a distance of 25 kilometers to the north. In addition to Eagle Lake in the east of the town, there is Dickwood Lake in the northwest . The town's surface is hilly, with no significant elevations.

history
As part of the in 1839 Aroostook War military units stayed in the area, they noticed a large number of bald eagles ( Haliaeetus leucocephalus ) (English. Bald Eagle ) and called the place and the lake so "Eagle Lake". Shortly afterwards, the first settlers settled there, established a plantation and worked in forestry. To give residents the right to vote, the area was organized as Eagle Lake on July 11, 1859. Previously the designation was Township 16 R7 WELS. In 1870 the first sawmill was put into operation, followed by others. In 1879 three such plants and a flour mill were built. In 1905 construction began on the Northern Maine General Hospital . In 1908 the connection to the telephone network took place. Eagle Lake was elevated to town on March 16, 1911.
Today Eagle Lake is a popular destination for scientists, ornithologists and hikers, but also for anglers and hunters because of its largely untouched nature with nearby forests and bodies of water and a remarkable population of wild animals (including deer and elk ) .
The Big Black Site is a listed archaeological site. It is approximately 0.4 hectares located near the mouth of the Big Black River, testifies to the occupation and use of the site over a period of several thousand years and ends in historical Times. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 under number 75000090.

As the only major road, Maine State Route 11 runs north-south through the town. It runs parallel to the shore of Eagle Lake.
