Van Buren is a town in Aroostook County in the state of Maine in the United States . Hamlin is on the border with Canada . In 2010, 2171 inhabitants lived there on an area of 91.0 km². 76.6% of residents speak French, although the official language in Maine English is.

Geographical location
Van Buren is located in the northeast of Aroostook County, on the border with Canada. This runs through the middle of the Saint John River , on the southern bank of which Van Buren is located. A few small rivers flow in an easterly direction through the area of the town, they flow into the Saint John River. The surface is level, the highest point is the 205 m high Reservoir Hill in the southeast of Van Buren.

history
The area was originally settled by Acadians in 1785. They had been expelled from Nova Scotia, Canada ( deportation of the Acadians ). The Acadian Village , in which the original buildings and reproductions are gathered, has been preserved. It is one of the largest historical sites in Main. Acadian Village has a school, chapel, general store, log cabins, blacksmith shop, grist mill, and wool mill. The oldest building dates from the 1790s.
As the Van Buren Plantation, the area was organized in 1843 to give residents the right to vote. Likewise in 1857 and 1859. The plantation was legalized in 1867, 1874 and finally confirmed in 1970. The original name for this area. Van Buren became a town on February 11, 1881.
Van Buren is named after the eighth President of the United States, Martin Van Buren .
In 1913 the Van Buren Bridge Company was founded as a subsidiary of the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad , the only task of which was to build a bridge over the Saint John River.

Buildings
There are several buildings of historical importance in the area of the town. They have been listed and listed on the National Register of Historic Places :
The Acadian Village buildings are now a museum. It is located on Highway 1. The complex includes six historic buildings, five of which are from the 19th century and one is a modern reproduction. The historical life of the French-American population at the end of the 19th century is documented in the buildings. The building complex was opened in 1977 under the register no. 77000062 added.
The Fortunat O. Michaud House was built in the early 20th century as the residence of a local politician in Queen Anne style . It was registered in 1989 under the register no. 89002343 added.

The US Highway 1 runs along the Saint John River by Van Buren. Several rail lines run through Van Buren, the Eastern Maine Railway , the Brownville – Saint-Leonard and the Van Buren – Saint Francis

The Abel J. Morneault Memorial Library is located in Van Buren . It is also available to residents of neighboring towns.
