St. John Plantation is a plantation in Aroostook County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there lived 267 inhabitants in 154 households on an area of ​​133.5 km². 59.5% of the residents are French-speaking.

Geographical location

St. John is located on the south bank of the eponymous Saint John River , which forms the border with Canada here. The surface of the area is slightly hilly and the highest point is the 435 m high Bossy Mountain in the east on the border with Fort Kent .

The St John Plantation was originally named Township No. 17, Eighth Range West of the Easterly Line of the State (T17 R8 WELS). First the area was used by loggers from the Kennebac Valley. In 1858 a petition was filed for the area to be organized for plantation. This was done in 1859 and was finally confirmed in 1870.

Culture and sights

Buildings

Two buildings in St. John are listed buildings and have been added to the National Register of Historic Places .

The Roosvelt School in St. John was built according to a standard plan in 1920 and was used as a school building until 1969. It is the last surviving historic school building in a small rural community. In 1992 it was listed as a historic monument and entered into the National Register of Historic Places with the register number 92001706.

In 2003, St. John Catholic Church was incorporated under registration number 03000017. It was built between 1909 and 1911 and is a finely detailed example of colonial religious architecture in a remote rural setting.

The Maine State Route 161 runs north along the Saint John River. It is the only major road in the Plantation area.

St. John does not have its own library. The closest is the Fort Kent Public Library in Fort Kent. With Northern Maine Medical Center a private hospital, the closest medical facility is also in Fort Kent.

St. John Plantation is part of the Maine School Administrative District # 27 with Allagash, Eagle Lake, Fort Kent, New Canada, Saint Francis, Wallagrass and the Winterville Plantation .
