Carleton County ( French Comté de Carleton ) is a county in the Canadian province of New Brunswick . The county was named after Thomas Carleton , first lieutenant governor of the British colony of New Brunswick. It covers an area of 3312.72 km². The population has been falling in recent years. In 2016 it was 26,220.

The county is located in the central west of the province. It borders the US state of Maine to the west . The Saint John River flows through the area in a southerly direction.
