Richard Hugo Gallagher

Richard Hugo Gallagher (born November 17, 1927 in New York City , † September 30, 1997 in Tucson ) was an American civil engineer.

biography

Gallagher studied civil engineering after serving in the US Navy at New York University with a bachelor's degree in 1949. He was then an engineer at the US Department of Commerce and the Texas Corporation in New York, where he continued his studies to the master's degree in 1951. From 1955 to 1967 he was an engineer at Bell Aero Systems in Buffalo. There he worked on the finite element method (FEM) and in 1962 published the first work on three-dimensional elements (tetrahedral shape) with J. Padlog and PPBijlaard. In 1966 he received his PhD from the State University of New York at Buffalo . The dissertation was on curved finite elements for thin shells. From 1967 he taught at Cornell University , from 1969 as a professor. From 1978 to 1984 he was Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Arizona and from 1984 to 1988 Provost and Vice President of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. From 1988 to 1995 he was President of Clarkson University .

He used finite elements in, among other things, shell theory and hydrodynamics.

His textbook on finite elements has been translated into several languages.

He has been to China several times and received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University in Shanghai in 1992. In 1993 he received the ASME Medal and he was an honorary member of the ASCE.

1970 to 1997 he was editor of the Journal of Numerical Methods in Engineering .
