The SAN-Ecuador flight 832 was a scheduled domestic flight of the airline SAN Ecuador from Guayaquil to Quito . On April 29, 1983, a serious incident occurred on this flight when a Sud Aviation Caravelle VI-R crashed shortly after taking off from Guayaquil airport after a double engine failure. 8 of the 100 people on board were killed in the accident.

The aircraft involved in the accident was a Sud Aviation Caravelle VI-R with the model serial number 125, which had made its maiden flight on July 20, 1962, before it was delivered four days later to TAP Air Portugal , where it had the aircraft registration CS -TCB has been approved. On November 27, 1975, the machine was sold to SAN Ecuador, where it received the identification HC-BAT and the name La Pinta . The twin - engined narrow -body aircraft was equipped with two Rolls-Royce Avon 533R engines.

Events from the day before the accident

On April 28, 1983, the flight captain German Cruz carried out a test flight with the machine after an engine overhaul. After he parked the plane, he reported that the machine would not fly well.

In the afternoon of the next day, the plane was prepared for a domestic flight to Quito. It had been noted in the logbook that the engines had been checked again and found to be good. On flight 832, Captain Cruz was again at the helm. The machine received clearance to take off runway 21 from Guayaquil Airport . Immediately after the rotation , the left engine failed . The captain decided to return to the airport. During the turnaround, the right engine also slowly lost power. The Caravelle eventually stalled and crashed into a muddy field. The hull broke into three parts. Eight of the 100 occupants died, including one crew member and seven passengers.
