history

The history of settlement on Mount Desert Island began in 1604 by Pierre Dugua de Mons . In 1688, Louis XIV gave the island of Mount Desert as a grant with additional areas to Antoine de la Motte Cadillac . Laumet was an officer in his service, later governor of Louisiana. Cadillac could not hold its own in the country and left it in 1713. His descendant Madame de Gregoire claimed the land in 1785 before the General Court of Massachusetts. However, this confirmed the claim minus the land that was currently settled by settlers.

Fernalds Point on Somes Sound near the northern border of the town is likely the location of the former “St. Sauveur ”, a settlement founded by Madame de Guercheville in 1613. A cluster of seashells nearby should also be an indication of an Indian settlement.

Southwest Harbor was organized as an independent town on February 21, 1905 from the area of the town of Tremont. The name is derived from the opposite port in Mount Desert, Northeast Harbor. First of all, the favorable location on Somes Sound was used by fishermen. Fishing has been the main economic driver of Southwest Harbor. When the town of Tremont separated from the town of Mount Desert in 1848 under the name of Mansel, the area of Southwest Harbor also belonged to this new town. It was split off and organized independently in 1905 due to disputes about a new school.

Mount Desert Island with its towns developed into a popular holiday destination at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Wealthy American families like the Rockefellers and the Astors owned vacation homes here.
