Astor (family)
The Astor family is a family of German descent living in the United States and Great Britain who were at times considered the richest family in the United States in the 19th century. Their roots are in Walldorf (Baden) . The founder of the family is considered to be the German emigrant Johann Jakob Astor , who immigrated to the USA after the American Revolution and made his fortune in the fur trade ( American Fur Company ) and later in the real estate business, especially in the up-and-coming New York .
One branch of the family settled in Great Britain in the late 19th century and holds the hereditary titles of Viscount Astor and Baron Astor of Hever .
