John Jacob Astor VIII, 3rd Baron Astor of Hever (born June 16, 1946 ) is a British businessman, politician ( Conservative Party ) and peer .

life and career

Astor was born on June 16, 1946 to Gavin Astor, 2nd Baron Astor of Hever and Irene Astor. After training at Eton , he served in the Life Guard from 1966 to 1970 . Astor worked in France for 11 years and was the "patron" of the Conservative Party there.

He is a member of the House of Lords as an elected hereditary peer for the Tories . In 1984 he became Baron Astor after the death of his father . In 1994 he was an election observer in Johannesburg . He is since 1996 as Deputy Lieutenant of Kent operates. Since 1998 he was the opposition whip . In 1998 he became secretary of the Motor Group and in 2000 of the Autism Group. He has been treasurer of the South Africa Group since 2001 and of the Switzerland Group since 2002. Since 2003 he has been the Tories' spokesman in the House of Lords for Defense, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and International Development. He currently also holds the position of "Parliamantary Under Secreteray of State, Ministry of Defense".

Since October 2012 he has been an honorary member of the Lions Club Walldorf-Astoria.

family

Astor was first married to Fiona Diana Lennox Harvey from 1970 until her divorce in 1990 and has three children with her. In 1990 he married Elizabeth Constance Mackintosh . He has two children with her. One of his daughter is autistic.
