Winter Harbor is a town in Hancock County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010, 516 people lived there in 255 households on an area of 179.02 km 2 .

According to the United States Census Bureau , Winter Harbor has a total area of 179.02 km², of which 37.19 km² is land and 141.83 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Winter Harbor is located in southeast Hancock County on a headland on the Atlantic Ocean . Flanders Bay and Mount Dessert Narrows are adjacent to the west . Birch Harbor Pond is centrally located in the town area . The surface is flat, without any significant elevations.

history
The area of the later Winter Harbor was settled as early as 1762. The plantation was originally named Musquito Harbor . The name was changed to Winter Harbor in 1854 . The name Winter Harbor is based on the fact that the harbor does not freeze over, even in winter. Thus it served as a refuge for many ships in winter. Winter Harbor Lighthouse was built in 1856. Winter Harbor was organized as an independent town on February 21, 1895. Previously, Winter Harbor was part of the Gouldsboro Town area.

Coming from the north, Maine State Route 186 heads south to Winter Harbor and then leaves the town area east.
