Verona Island is a town in Hancock County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010, 544 people lived there in 292 households on an area of 22.71 km².

Geographical location
Verona Island is an island in the confluence of the Penobscot River in Penobscot Bay and in the west of Hancock County and borders in the north on Waldo County . In addition to the large island of Verona Island, the smaller island Porcupina Island to the east belongs to the town. There are no lakes on the islands. The surface is slightly hilly, with no significant elevations.

history
Verona Island was settled from 1780 and on February 18, 1861 organized as a town under the name Verona . The name was changed to Verona Island in 2004. Verona was named after the Italian city of Verona . Before being organized as a town, the area was called Wetmore Isle Plantation . Other names were Penobscot Island, Isle of Lett, and Orphan Island, the latter because the island was everything General Henry Knox had left for his orphaned grandchildren.
Shipbuilding has always been one of the economic sectors on Verona Island. The Roosevelt , Robert Edwin Peary's ship , with which he started his expedition to the North Pole, was built here.

Verona Island is connected to Prospekt in the west via the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and to Bucksport in the north via another bridge. US Highway 1 runs over these two bridges . Next to the Penobscot Narrows Bridge is the Waldo-Hancock Bridge , built in 1931 and closed in 2006 . The Waldo-Hancock Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places under No. 85001267 until it was dismantled .
