Peter Suber

Peter Suber (born November 8, 1951 ) is a professor of philosophy at Earlham College in Richmond , Indiana and one of the leading players in the Open Access movement. He is Director of the Open Access Public Knowledge Project and Senior Researcher in the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC). He is also known as the inventor of the game Nomic .

Suber graduated from Earlham College in 1973. He received his PhD in Philosophy in 1978 and a JD in 1982, both from Northwestern University . From 1976 to 1981 he worked as a stand-up comedian , where he had an appearance on Johnny Carson's Tonight Show in 1976 .

In 2001 Suber attended the meeting that led to the first international open access initiative, the Budapest Open Access Initiative . From 2002 to 2010 he wrote the weblog Open Access News and since 2001 the SPARC Open Access Newsletter (until 2003 under the name Free Online Scholarship (FOS) Newsletter ).

Suber is married with two children and has lived in Brooksville, Maine since 2003 .
