For the 2006/07 season there was a reunion with Houllier: Diarra switched to reigning French champions Olympique Lyon for around seven million euros and contributed to the OL championship with one goal in 15 appearances . Most recently, Diarra fell out with Houllier, who, however, resigned at the end of the season. Thereupon Werder Bremen showed interest in a commitment Diarra; the change did not materialize, however, since Diarra moved to league rivals Girondins Bordeaux in July 2007 for 7.7 million euros . In 2008 he was second in the championship and won it with the team in 2009 .
In the 2011/12 season he played for the first division and second last season Olympique Marseille . With him he won the first title of the season on July 27, 2011 in Tangier, Morocco . In the game for the Supercup , his team beat Lille OSC spectacularly 5: 4 in regular time.

After the loan period expired, he played his first league game on August 17, 2013 (1st matchday) in a 2-0 home win against Cardiff City .
