Crypt Sermon is an American epic doom band from Philadelphia , Pennsylvania that was formed in 2013.
history
The band was formed in 2013 by bassist and vocalist Brooks Wilson, guitarists Steve Jansson and James Lipczynski and drummer Enrique Sagarnaga. In January 2014, Wilson decided to concentrate completely on the vocals, after which Will Mellor joined the cast as bassist. The first demo MMXIII was published in June 2013 . In 2015 the debut album Out of the Garden was released , on which the band had worked for about a year and a half.
style
Rock Hard's Mandy Malon wrote that the band was playing Epic Doom. In an interview with her, Jansson stated that this genre is not very popular in the USA. A conscious decision was made against the stoner rock and sludge trend. The group wants to focus more on songwriting than on "dull, dragging clatter and volume for the sake of volume". The texts are influenced by the Bible, with Brooks Wilson writing the texts. The members are not religious, but Wilson attended a Christian school in his childhood and knows a lot about this topic. Influences for the band would be groups like Iron Maiden , Metallica , Scorpions , Mercyful Fate , Riot , Dead Can Dance and Fields of the Nephilim . In addition, film music is also an important influence. Otherwise, try to process your own personalities and personal experiences in the songs.
Reini from stormbringer.at wrote in his review of the debut album that the band Epic Doom plays in the style of Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus , whereby in contrast to the two bands mentioned, they still incorporate traditional metal sounds. On the album, the band sounds like King Diamond on a Mercyful Fate album, but without the falsetto vocals. The singer Wilson sounds like a mixture of Mark "The Shark" Shelton from Manilla Road , Ronnie James Dio and Geoff Tate . Due to the Dio influence, a Black Sabbath comparison comes close, with particular similarities to Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules .
