William D. Williamson
William Durkee Williamson (born July 31, 1779 in Canterbury , Windham County , Connecticut , † May 27, 1846 in Bangor , Maine ) was an American politician and in 1821 the second governor of the state of Maine.
Early years
Williamson attended Williams College and Brown University . There he graduated in 1804. After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1807. Between 1811 and 1816 he was a district attorney in Hancock County . From 1816 to 1820 he was a member of the Massachusetts Senate . After the state of Maine was founded in 1820, he was elected to the Senate . There he even became President of the House. In this capacity he fell on May 29, 1821 after the resignation of Governor William King his office.
Governor of Maine
Williamson only remained in his new office until December 5, 1821. During this time he promoted industry in his state. The reason for his resignation was his election to the United States House of Representatives . He stayed there until 1823. Between 1824 and 1840 Williamson was a probate judge in Penobscot County . William Williamson died on May 27, 1846 and was buried in Bangor.
