William Dodd Hathaway
William Dodd Hathaway (born February 21, 1924 in Cambridge , Massachusetts , † June 24, 2013 in McLean , Virginia ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of Maine in both chambers of Congress .
Life
Hathaway attended public schools in Boston . During the Second World War he fought in the ranks of the US Army Air Corps . He was shot down over Romania and was a prisoner of war for two months . In 1946 he retired from the army with the rank of captain .
After finishing his military career, Hathaway studied law . He graduated from Harvard in 1949 and graduated from the law school there in 1953. That same year he was inducted into the bar and began practicing in Lewiston . From 1955 to 1957 he was the assistant prosecutor in Androscoggin County .
His political career began with the election to the US House of Representatives , to which he belonged from January 3, 1965 to January 3, 1973. At that time, the Democrats were very successful in traditionally Republican Maine. So Hathaway renounced another candidacy for the House of Representatives and instead stood against the Republican Senator Margaret Chase Smith , whom he then brought by a narrow margin the only electoral defeat of her political career at the state level. He was a member of the Senate until January 2, 1979; when attempting re-election he failed because of the future Secretary of Defense William Cohen .
After his time in Congress, William Hathaway worked as a lawyer in Washington, DC. In 1990, President George Bush appointed him to the Federal Maritime Commission , which he headed from 1993 to 1996 when he retired.
Hathaway died at the age of 89 from complications from lung fibrosis in his home in McLean , Virginia .
