Amos Nourse

Amos Nourse (born December 17, 1794 in Bolton , Worcester County , Massachusetts , † April 7, 1877 in Bath , Maine ) was an American politician .

Life

Early life

Amos Nourse graduated from Harvard College in 1812 and graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1817 with a degree in medicine . He nevertheless took up a profession as a civil servant and was postmaster in Hallowell (Maine) from 1822 to 1841 . Since 1821 he was married to Clauissa Augusta Chandler (1797-1834), a daughter of John Chandler . Several children were born from the marriage.

In 1845 Nourse moved from Wiscasset , the city he lived in, to Bath and worked in customs until 1846. With the money he made, he was able to afford a small doctor's office in Bath. Additional income came from his work as a visiting professor at Bowdoin College in Brunswick , where he taught obstetrics from 1846 to 1854 . Nourse became a college professor in 1855 and taught until 1866.

Political activity

After Hannibal Hamlin's resignation as US Senator , Nourse was appointed as a Republican party member in 1856 to succeed him. The mandate, which he assumed on January 16, 1857, was held by Nourse for just under two months, until March 3, 1857. Then he was replaced by Hamlin.

Late life

In 1860, Nourse was appointed honorary judge in the Sagadahoc County Probate Court. However, he resigned his office in the same year for reasons not known in detail.

Amos Nourse died in 1877, at the age of 82.
