Daniel J. McGillicuddy

Daniel John McGillicuddy (born August 27, 1859 in Lewiston , Maine , †  July 30, 1936 there ) was an American politician . Between 1911 and 1917 he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Daniel McGillicuddy attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1881 Bowdoin College in Brunswick . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1883, he began to practice in Lewiston in his new profession. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1884 and 1885 he was an MP in the Maine House of Representatives . McGillicuddy served as mayor of Lewiston in 1887, 1890 and 1902. He was also a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions of 1892, 1904, 1912 and 1920. In 1906 and 1908 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress .

In 1910 McGillicuddy was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of Maine . There he took over from John P. Swasey of the Republican Party on March 4, 1911 . After two re-elections he was able to complete three consecutive terms in Congress by March 3, 1917. During this time the 16th and 17th amendments to the constitution were discussed and passed there.

In the congressional elections of 1916 and 1918 Gillicuddy was defeated by Republican Wallace H. White . Between 1917 and 1932 he was a member of the Democratic National Committee . He also continued to work as a lawyer in Lewiston. He died there on July 30, 1936.
