Charles Pembroke Nelson (born July 2, 1907 in Waterville , Maine , †  June 8, 1962 in Augusta , Maine) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1957 he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Nelson was a son of John E. Nelson (1874–1955), who had represented the state of Maine in Congress between 1921 and 1932 . The younger Nelson attended Cony High School in Augusta until 1924 and then Colby College in Waterville until 1928 . After studying law at Harvard University , he was admitted to the bar in 1931. In 1931 and 1932 he worked as the secretary of his father, who was then a congressman. Then he practiced as a lawyer in Augusta. Between 1934 and 1942 he was the city's legal representative.

Politically, Nelson was a member of the Republican Party . In 1936 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland , where Alf Landon was nominated as a presidential candidate. In 1941 and 1942, Nelson was head of the Maine State Arson Division . Between 1942 and 1946 he took part in the Second World War as an officer in the US Army Air Corps . He was deployed in Europe and made it to lieutenant colonel until he left the military. After the war he became a member of the National Guard reserve.

Charles Nelson was Mayor of Augusta from 1947 to 1948. In the congressional elections of 1948 he was then in the second constituency of Maine in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC selected. There he took over from Margaret Chase Smith on January 3, 1949 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1957. During this time the Korean War fell and the civil rights movement began. In 1951, the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution was passed, which limited the presidential term to two terms. In 1956 Nelson declined to run again.

Between 1957 and 1959 Nelson taught at the University of Florida in Gainesville . He also worked as a criminal defense lawyer and was a member of the Autobahn Committee in 1959. Charles Nelson died in Augusta on June 8, 1962.
