Michael Herman "Mike" Michaud (born January 18, 1955 in Millinocket , Maine ) is an American politician . From 2003 to 2015 he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Mike Michaud attended Schenk High School in East Millinocket until 1973 . Since then he has worked as a foreman in the Millinocket paper mill of the Great Northern Paper Company . He has been politically active since the late 1970s. He became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1980 and 1994 he was an MP in the Maine House of Representatives ; From 1994 to 2002 he was a member of the State Senate , of which he was President in 2001 and 2002.

In the 2002 congressional elections, Michaud was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the Maine Second Constituency . There he met on 3 January 2003, the successor to the governorship exchanged John Baldacci on. After five re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until January 3, 2015. There he was temporarily chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee and a member of the Transport and Infrastructure Committee and the Committee on Small Business . He was also a member of several sub-committees. In the run-up to the 2008 presidential election, he supported John Edwards .

Michaud lives in East Millinocket .

In 2014, as part of his campaign to become governor of Maine, he encountered a smear campaign by his opponents who tried to suggest he was gay by coming out in the Bangor Daily News . The same-sex marriage was legally possible in Maine from 29 December 2012, but Michaud is still unmarried. The candidacy for governor was unsuccessful. Michaud was defeated by the Republican incumbent Paul LePage with 43:48 percent of the vote.
