Peter Adams Garland (born June 16, 1923 in Boston , Massachusetts , †  January 26, 2005 in Brunswick , Maine ) was an American politician . Between 1961 and 1963 he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Peter Garland attended the public schools in Saco (Maine) and then the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville ( Connecticut ). He finished his education at Bowdoin College in Brunswick. During the Second World War Garland was a soldier in the US Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946 . After the war he was employed by Garland Manufacturing Co. , where he made it to director. He also worked in the same position for Snocraft Co. in Norway(Maine). Between 1955 and 1957 Garland was a director of the New England Council and Associated Industries of Maine. From 1952 to 1954 he sat on the school board of Saco; between 1956 and 1959 he was mayor of this city.

Politically, Garland was a member of the Republican Party . In the 1960 congressional election he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Maine . There he took over from James C. Oliver on January 3, 1961 . Since he was no longer nominated by his party in the following elections in 1962, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1963 . During this time the Cuban Missile Crisis fell . In addition, the 23rd Amendment to the Constitution was discussed and passed, which allowed the District of Columbia to participate in presidential elections.

In 1966, Garland sought unsuccessfully to return to Congress. Between 1967 and 1969 he was in charge of the administration of Gorham town . From 1970 to 1972 he was marketing director for an energy company. He was then entrusted with the management of the city government in various cities in Maine until 1989. After that, he retired. Peter Garfield died on January 26, 2005 in Brunswick.
