John M. Wood

John M. Wood (born November 17, 1813 in Minisink , Orange County , New York , †  December 24, 1864 in Boston , Massachusetts ) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1859 he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Wood attended the public schools in his home country and then worked in railroad construction in New Jersey . In 1846 he moved to Portland , Maine. There he also worked in the railway business. He also got into the banking industry and the newspaper business. Between 1853 and 1857 he was the newspaper "Portland Daily Advertiser" out. From 1852 to 1853 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Maine .

Politically, Wood joined the Republican Party, founded in 1854 . In the same year he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC as their candidate in the first constituency of Maine . There he took over from the Democrat Moses Macdonald on March 4, 1855 . That made Wood one of the first Republicans in Congress . After being re-elected in 1856, he was able to complete two legislative terms there until March 3, 1859. These were overshadowed by the discussions and events leading up to the civil war.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Wood returned to the railroad business. He was the construction of the connection between Woonsocket in Rhode Iceland and New Haven ( Connecticut involved). John Wood died during a visit to Boston on December 24, 1864.
