Digit Fund

The Digit Fund was founded in 1978 by Dr. Dian Fossey was set up to fund patrols against poachers who repeatedly killed mountain gorillas in the Virunga volcano area in Rwanda . The foundation was named after the gorilla Digit , who was particularly close to her and had been beheaded by poachers a year earlier.

Dian Fossey managed to maintain control of the Digit Fund in the United States until her death. After her assassination, it was renamed Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International in the US , Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Europe in the UK and later The Gorilla Organization .

The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International is still dedicated to protecting the gorillas and directs the Karisoke Research Center that Fossey established in 1967 with its daily gorilla surveillance and patrols.
