Joshua A. Lowell

Joshua Adams Lowell (born March 20, 1801 in Thomaston , Knox County , Massachusetts , †  March 13, 1874 in East Machias , Maine ) was an American politician . Between 1839 and 1843 he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joshua Lowell, born in what is now Maine, attended public schools in his homeland and then worked as a teacher. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1826, he began to practice in East Machias in his new profession. Politically, Lowell was a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1832 and 1837 he sat several times as an MP in the Maine House of Representatives .

In 1838 Lowell was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of Maine . There he succeeded Joseph C. Noyes of the Whig Party on March 4, 1839 . After re-election in 1840, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1841 . From 1841 he was chairman of the Ministry of Post's Expenditures Control Committee. During this time, discussions about a possible annexation of the Republic of Texas, which had been independent since 1836, also increased.

In 1842 Lowell declined to run again. In the following years he worked again as a lawyer. He died on March 13, 1874 in East Machias and was buried there.
