John P. Swasey
John Philip Swasey (born September 4, 1839 in Canton , Oxford County , Maine , † May 27, 1928 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1908 and 1911 he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Swasey attended public schools in his home country including Maine State Seminary . He then studied at Tufts College in Medford ( Massachusetts ). During the Civil War he was a first lieutenant in a Maine infantry unit . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1863, he began to work in his new profession in Canton.
In the years 1866 and 1867 Swasey was council clerk and chamberlain in Canton; from 1868 to 1870 he was District Attorney in Oxford County. At the same time he also worked for the tax authorities. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . He was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1874 and served on the State Senate from 1875 to 1876 . In 1883 and 1884 Swasey was on the advisory board of Governor Frederick Robie .
After the resignation of Congressman Charles E. Littlefield , Swasey was elected on November 3, 1908 in the second constituency of Maine as his successor in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . In this election he was also elected to the Congress for the following legislative period . Since he was defeated by the Democrat Daniel J. McGillicuddy in the 1910 elections, he could only stay in Congress in the US House of Representatives until March 3, 1911. After his tenure in Congress ended, John Swasey withdrew from politics. In the following years he worked again as a lawyer in Canton. He died there on May 27, 1928.
