Withego II of Colditz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Withego II of Colditz († July 26, 1342 ; Vítek z Koldic in Czech ) was Bishop of Meissen from 1312 to 1342 .

Withego II came from the von Colditz family , who together with Ulrich I von Colditz provided the Naumburg bishop and Thimo von Colditz the Meissen bishop. His first name appears in numerous variants as Witego, Wytigo, Witigo, Witke, Witko or Wythgo . His father was Heinrich the Elder from Colditz auf Wolkenstein, his mother was born von Leisnig , a sister of the previous Bishop Albrecht III. from Leisnig . Withego II was previously the Meißner canon and provost of Wurzen. Machatschek states that the naming of an opposing bishop named Wilhelm has proven to be an error of the author Fabricius. As a bishop Withego II was able to expand the monastery area further, he acquired the town of Nossen in 1315 and in 1336 bought the Liebethal estate from the Bohemian king. With the establishment of the Officialate, an authority responsible for ecclesiastical jurisdiction, he strengthened the position of the bishop in relation to the cathedral chapter. The central motif of the sandstone slab in the Meißner Dom is a large family coat of arms; the traditional inscription can only be read by letters today.
