Johann I of Isenburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann I. von Isenburg , also from Eisenburg, Eisenberg; Isenberg (* around 1300 in Meißen ; † January 4, 1370 ibid) was Bishop of Meißen .

Life

Johann came from a ministerial family that died out in the 15th century and whose name can be traced back to the village of Eisenberg , Moritzburg . His father was Hermann Eisenberg and his mother Gertrude kitchen master. Around 1330 he entered the service of the Margraves of Meißen and was a clerk for Frederick II the Serious . He accompanied him in 1339 to fight against the French King Philip VI. For his loyalty he received a canonical in the Marienstift von Eisenach in 1334 , and some time later also a canonical in the Meissen Cathedral , where he was promoted to provost in 1339 . In 1342 he became Bishop of Meissen, which he remained for thirty years.

During his tenure, his diocese was exposed to the increasing influence of Emperor Charles IV , who sought the incorporation of the Meissen diocese into his domain, which he achieved with the fact that the Prague Archbishop Johann Očko von Wlašim was appointed papal legate for the diocese in 1365 . Johann, who stayed mainly at his residence in Nossen , had the Meissen Cathedral expanded further in 1359, extended its church property with an altar and brought his brother Heinrich to the Meissen Cathedral Chapter .

His burial place was found according to the writings "in monasterio ante altare S. Crucis" - in front of the central part of the rood screen in the cathedral in Meissen , located between the graves of Bishop Withego I and Bishop Nikolaus I. It was a figure grave plate, which the Bishop in full regalia and with two coats of arms showed: his family coat of arms (Lord von Isenberg) and the coat of arms of Meissen Abbey . The traditional inscription shows that the bishop also found his burial place under his monument: "... huius ecclesie episcopus hic sepultus ..." (see Wäß 2006, cat. No. 607)
