Nehemiah Abbott

Nehemiah Abbott (born March 29, 1804 in Sidney , Massachusetts , †  July 26, 1877 in Belfast , Maine ) was an American politician .

Born in present-day Maine, Nehemiah Abbott studied law at Litchfield Law School in Connecticut . After joining the bar in 1836, Abbott practiced law in Calais , Maine. In 1839 he moved to Columbus in the state of Mississippi and continued his law practice from there. In 1840 he returned to Maine and settled in Belfast in Waldo County . Abbott served in the Maine House of Representatives for 1842, 1843, and 1845 . He was elected as a Republican to the 35th  Congress , where he represented the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives from March 4, 1857 to March 3, 1859. After his parliamentary career, Abbott was again active as a lawyer. He was Mayor of Belfast in 1865 and 1866.
