Joshua Cushman

Joshua Cushman (born April 11, 1761 in Halifax , Province of Massachusetts Bay , †  January 27, 1834 in Maine , Maine ) was an American politician . Between 1819 and 1821 he represented the state of Massachusetts and from 1821 to 1825 the state of Maine in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joshua Cushman was born during the British colonial era. Between 1777 and 1780 he was a soldier in the American Continental Army during the Revolutionary War . He then studied at Harvard University until 1787 . After studying theology, Cushman was ordained a clergyman. He moved to Winslow , which was part of Massachusetts until 1820 when it became part of the new state of Maine. There he was pastor of the Congregational Church for 20 years .

Politically, Cushman was a member of the Democratic Republican Party . In 1810 he was a member of the Massachusetts Senate ; from 1812 to 1812 he was a member of the State House of Representatives . In 1818 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 19th  constituency of Massachusetts . There he took over from Joshua Gage on March 4, 1819 . After Maine was founded, Cushman's district fell to this new state. Therefore, he was re-elected to Congress in 1820 for the sixth district of the new state . After the elections of 1822, he took over from William D. Williamson in the fourth district . Overall, Cushman completed three consecutive terms in Congress between March 4, 1819 and March 3, 1825. During this time the Missouri Compromise drawn up by Henry Clay was passed. This created the new state of Maine, which prohibited slavery , while it was allowed in the state of Missouri , which was also admitted to the Union.

After the dissolution of his party in the 1820s, Cushman joined the movement around President John Quincy Adams , which was in opposition to Andrew Jackson and his later founded Democratic Party . In 1828, Cushman was a member of the Maine Senate ; from January 1, 1834 until his death on January 27 of the same year he was a member of the House of Representatives from Maine . He has sat in both houses of the state legislatures of Massachusetts and Maine and represented both states and in the US House of Representatives. Joshua Cushman was buried in Augusta.
